WD My Passport SSD

One of the important factors when it comes to buying a device these days is Storage. Consumers are now making extra efforts to make sure the device they buy, be it a smartphone, a tablet or even a laptop, has a good storage capacity. We are way beyond those days when data was burned on a CD/DVD or even put in a pen drive. This is where the external storage devices come into picture. We recently got a chance to review the256GB variant of WD My Passport SSD. The black/grey colour is what we got and it looked pretty decent. Let’s talk in the detail about this very sleek WD My Passport SSD.

THE LOOKS

WD My Passport SSD

WD My Passport SSD- In the Box

I am highly impressed with the design of this SSD. The upper half of it is glossy and for obvious reasons attracts the dust and your fingerprints. The bottom half is matte finish and hence balances the overall feel of the device. The upper half, with the WD branding in the center, is black and the bottom half is grey. Here comes the interesting part- the WD My Passport SSD comes with a USB C slot and a USB-c + USB-A adapter to connect to a laptop. The dimensions of the device stand at 3.5×1.8×0.39 inches and 120g heavy, making it super sleek and compact.

The WD My Passport SSD comes in four storage capacities- 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. WD My Passport SSD is engineered to withstand a drop from a height upto 6.5 feet (1.98 meters).

THE PERFORMANCE

WD My Passport SSD

The most important criteria, is it? Yes, the performance is what matters the most. Now is the time when you take the read/write speeds into consideration. In order to check this out, we did run a test on CrystalDiskMark for WD My Passport SSD.

The CrystalDiskMark test showed massive read and write speeds at 335 MB/s and 332 MB/s respectively. Now these speeds are way too impressive for an external SSD. It would literally take a few seconds if you were to transfer 2-3 gigs of a file. On transferring a file of size roughly 2GB from my PC to WD My Passport, it took less than about 15 seconds.

You can set a password to help keep your WD My Passport SSD protected with the built-in 256-bit AES Hardware Encryption with WD Security software. Built for Mac or PC, the My Passport SSD is compatible with USB Type-C and USB Type-A ports. It’s USB Type-C is capable to reach read speeds up to 515MB/s. Also, USB 3.1 Gen 2 ready, and USB 3.0, 2.0 and USB-A compatible.

WD APPS

WD My Passport SSD

The WD My Passport comes in with three tools for Windows- WD Backup, WD Drive Utility and WD Security.

WD BACKUP

This is a very helpful tool if you are in a habit of backing up your important data to the external SSD on a regular basis. All you need to do is provide the folder and it will sync the data from that particular folder to the WD My Passport as per the schedule and frequence you have set. You can also sync data to and from Dropbox.

WD DRIVE UTILITY

This is a software to manage your device. You get to check the drive status along with an option to run diagnostic tests. The content can be securely erased using WD Drive Utility.

WD SECURITY

Well, you do want to keep your important data secured, be it on your PC or in your external SSD. And that is where the WD Security software comes to your help. It locks your data using 256-bit hardware encryption. All you need to do is set up a password and more importantly remember it. Why is that? Because there is absolutely no way to reset this password. Also, this tool becomes very handy because you do not need to install it on every PC that you connect it to. Once you have set the password, the device will automatically get locked when you reboot the PC or reconnect the WD My Passport again.

THE WARRANTY

The WD My Passport SSD is Compatible with Windows® 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, macOS High Sierra, Sierra or El Capitan. You might be required to reformed the SSD for other operating systems. The WD My Passport SSD comes with a 3 year limited warranty. Currently priced at Rs. 8,999 on Amazon.in, the WD My Passport 256GB is a smart buy.
