From pillar to post everyone knows eBay, the famous internet auction site where you could trade from crafts to cars. Well it was the brain child of Pierre Morad Omidyar born in June 21, 1967 in Paris he was a computer enthusiast from childhood. He was not only a bright computer programmer he also knows how to trade.
He is an Iranian-American economist who graduated from Tufts University in 1988 with a major in computer science. He wrote his first computer program at the age of 14 to list books for a school library. He was not a born entrepreneur or someone who had keen eye to initiate the fire, after his graduation he joined a company that made Macintosh software. Later he went to work for apple and following that he helped develop a company called Ink Development Corp which was later acquired by Microsoft and was named eShop.
Without having hope of finding a prospective seller he launched a web page to sell his broken laser pointer for auction, even though it was broken there was someone to buy it which made the reality dawn on him that internet auction could really work. To his wonder the site attracted lot of people for buying and selling which led him to develop a devoted website for auction. He wanted to name it echobay and since it was already taken he settled with the name ebay. By charging as little as 25cents to $2 for each auction notice, the company made profit. Nine months after he started the site his company saw immense growth and that is when he quit his job and dedicated himself to make ebay a much big success.
By May 1998 the company got a new CEO and the company started thriving by launching its services in various countries. By the end of that year they already had 2.1 million members and generated $750 million dollars as revenue. Right away the company became a commercial success as well as he created a new trend of online auction that was followed by Amazon and other competitors.
Later in 2004 Pierre and his wife Pam found the Omidyar network a philanthropist association that helps people to get an opportunity to improvise their life. He also received the honorary degree for Doctor of Public Service from Tufts University in 2011.
