iOS 11

Apple Worldwide Developer Conference 2017 kicked off on June 5 in San Jose. Along with many other announcements was announced a new iOS version. A new iOS version means a number of changes- sometimes small and at times monumental. And this update is monumental. Nearly everything including interface, camera, Apple Pay, DND  has been tweaked. Let’s talk about the iOS 11 features announced at WWDC 2017 keynote.

iOS 11 Features

iOS 11- Control Center

The user interface has received major upgrade. Lock Screen and Notifications have been unified. A swipe on the lock screen presents you with the most important notifications.

Control Centre has all the controls on one page. To access the additional controls, you can use 3D Touch.

iOS 11- DND

Apart from the usual DND features, a new mode called “Car Mode” has been added. While driving, this blocks all notifications. In case of emergency, only VIP contacts can get through.

Bluetooth Connectivity is used to detect that you are driving and in case this is not possible, Apple uses WiFi Doppler effect to detect your driving. Fellow passengers can disable this feature. This, for us, is one of the important iOS 11 features.

iOS 11- Siri

Siri, the digital assistant for iDevices has a sizable user base of 380 million users. It is already very feature rich and very tightly integrated into iOS. The new Siri comes with Deep learning to answer your queries better.

Siri can translate your content from English to languages like Italian, Chinese, French, German and Spanish. Its interface has also been updated. It has also got a new voice to sound more like humans. Also depending on the context, Siri can answer queries.

File Management

There is a new File Manager app called Files with ability to display not just your local files but also on other iOS devices, in iCloud Drive, and across other services like Box and Dropbox as well.

You can easily browse, search, and organize all your files in one place.

In iOS 11, it’s easier than ever to multitask. You can open a new app right from the Dock. Both apps remain active in Slide Over as well as Split View. The App Switcher has also been redesigned.

Live Photos

In iOS , you can do a lot more with live photos. Some features include Loops, Bounce and Long Exposure.

Apple’s phones always have had excellent cameras. The hardware improvements come with next iPhone. iOS 11 has a lot of software improvements to the camera.

With improving camera quality, high memory consumption is an inevitable. Apple has taken this into account and replaced the old JPEG with HEIF format. CHIEF promises great image quality at roughly half the original size.

For videos, new iPhones will use HEVC (H.265) to record videos. This consumes only half as much space compared to H.264.

Apple Maps

Though Apple Maps is not as good as Google Maps but with each new update the gap is decreasing. Yesterday, Apple announced some new ones like Lane guidance and speed limits. Indoor navigation for buildings such as maps is also available. Unsurprisingly, this feature will be available only in large US cities as of now with few major metropolis of the world also covered.

AppStore has served nearly 180 Billion downloads over its entire lifetime and has been instrumental in the popularity of Apple devices. In this update, Apple has separated the Apps and Games tab. The Games tab will list in-app purchases below the game. The Today tab lists Apple’s favourite games, apps and developers of the day.

Apple Pay

Apple Pay is used by about 50 million users worldwide. In iOS 11, users can use iMessage to send and receive payments. Simple instructions such as “Pay” etc can be used to transact.

AR Kit

The world is moving towards Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). With AR Kit, the developers will be able to provide the users a more immersive experience.

This was our list of some of the major iOS 11 features, which one is your favourite?
