Reports related to Microsoft launching Chromebook competitor have been circulating since the last few weeks. And today it’s confirmed. Microsoft today announced the Surface Laptop with Windows 10S, a new version of Windows 10 tailored for students. Last year, it had launched the Surface book and now a fully fledged laptop.
With this laptop, Microsoft has decided to take Google’s Chromebook head-on which has seen grand success among students. A recent report by Futuresource consulting found out that Chromebooks have close to 50% share in the US in K-12 education.

As can be seen from the specs, the laptop has qualities befitting the needs of students – light weight, sturdy Aluminium built, excellent battery backup, light OS, touch support, back lit keyboard, multiple color options etc. As an introductory offer, Microsoft is also providing 1 year of Office 365 Personal subscriptions for free for orders until 15th Oct 2017.
The Windows 10S that will ship with Surface Laptop is a light version of Windows 10. It is also more restrictive, for instance apps can only be installed from Windows Store.
There is no doubt that this is a good machine and can find success in developed countries. But to be touted as a Chromebook competitor, it should be inexpensive because no matter the country, students everywhere are on a tight budget. Compared to Chromebbook which starts from as low as 199$, this one is a lot expensive.
