Adding a member to the Gear family, Samsung on Tuesday launched the Gear S3. The smartwatch will be available in two variants- Classic and Frontier and will be up for sale at the Samsung retail stores from January 18 at a price of Rs. 28,500.

The first glimpse of the Samsung Gear S3 came in at IFA 2016 and runs on Samsung’s Tizen OS instead of the conventional Android Wear which rest of the smartwatches in the market are build upon. While the Classic variant has a very refined look, the rontier model on the other hand shows off a rugged design with a MIL-STD-810G rating. The cases are made of high-end watch grade 316L steel and the rotating bezel enables user to snooze alarms or answer calls without touching the display.

A cellular radio chip housed in the Frontier model enables the Gear S3 to connect to high speed 4G network which means that the device need not be tethered to the smartphone in order to make calls or connect to the internet. And this particular feature makes the Gear S3 unique. The latest Apple Watch Series 2 too does not have this feature wherein the smartwatch can connect directly to the internet.

Samsung Gear S3 boasts a 1.3-inch always-on Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360×360 pixels. What comes along is the Gorilla Glass SR+ protection, IP68 water and dust resistance, built-in GPS and also a built-in speaker. Powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor, both the models sport Bluetooth v4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, and NFC/MST. They are powered by a 380mAh battery. The Frontier model also has 3G/LTE cpabilities. Samsung has also come up with the Samsung Gear S app on iOS in order to expand the support of S2 and S3 smartwatches to Apple devices.

“With the Gear S3, we continue to build on our wearables heritage of offering diverse choices to enhance consumers’ unique lifestyles,” said Manu Sharma, Vice President, Mobile Business, Samsung India. “Gear S2 achieved meaningful progress in the smartwatch category with a personalized watch face and a versatile rotating bezel that provided an intuitive smartwatch experience. Now with the new Gear S3, we expand our Gear collection and introduce not only a great smartwatch, but a great watch. With smart capabilities and sophisticated, elegant design, the Gear S3 marks a significant addition to our smartwatch portfolio.”
