Design & Ergonomics

Taking cues from the award-winning legacy, Asus too endowed this phone with its signature concentric circled brush metal finish and curved back. The most outstanding and notable design feature is the placement of the volume buttons right below the backside camera lens. Also the backside houses the laser blaster for rapid-autofocus and the dual true-tone flash LEDs. The curved back helps the phone fit snugly inside your palms whether you’re typing on the go or enjoying an engrossing gaming session.

The volume buttons feel aptly placed as even in landscape mode they are easily accessible. Besides making it extremely comfortable to hold this device, the ergonomic arc design with the intuitive rear controls make it easy to adjust the volume, snap selfies or retrace your steps. However, the placement of the lock/power buttons seems oddly placed on top of the phone besides the 3.5mm audio jack. But since Zen UI offers the double tap gesture to lock/wake the screen, it’s probably what most users will stick to.

The matte finish on the back helps with the grip and also aesthetically. The front bezels along the corners give maximum experience to the user of the 5.5” HD IPS screen (~70.8% screen-to-body ratio). The phone tapers to a thickness of a mere 10.8mm on the sides, thanks to the curved design.

Camera & Display

With this phone, we get a 13MP Asus PixelMaster snapper housed in the back while in the front above the screen is a 5MP camera. The camera does wonders for its budget of 15K. As expected by its name, the camera goes on to impress you even in low light conditions. Coupled with the dual LEDs, the picture quality is clear-just right for those clubs and evening quick snaps with your buddies. The laser focus helps in focussing easily in low light too. Unlike, contrast detection that relies on the contrast difference in pixel coloring , laser focus equally excels in both low-light and daylight conditions. The camera performs well in HDR mode although detail leaves us wanting for more. But the quality, for its price gives bang for buck definitely. The front camera performs decently too though low-light photography experience is not that good.

The thin bezels hold a 5.5” 720×1280 pixel resolution HD IPS panel display. As with the IPS displays, the viewing angles are good and the 16M can all been seen in their glory even in sunlight. The screen has some good black reproduction. Protecting the screen is the transparent armour of Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The screen is still prone to fingerprint smudging and could be annoying after typing for long or after an intense gaming moment. The pixel density of 297ppi might not be the best you could want but it’s decent enough to give you a good video watching or photo gallery experience.
